Who are Bi-TAS, what do we do?

We are Bi-TAS, Birmingham Testing and Scanning Ltd.

We are a boutique structural investigation company. What does that mean? We are the Sherlock Holmes of the construction industry. We deal in providing accurate information on existing structures using our expertise, know-how and experience by incorporating technology and state of the art practices. Our clients, who range from consultant engineers, government, property management companies and everyone in between get in touch with us to find out what they need from their structure to keep it healthy or to move their project along when it stalls.

We work on everything from rooftops at the top of sky scrapers, to nuclear power stations, highway bridges, industrial buildings, university buildings, and everything in between. You name it, we have likely worked on it.

Every day and every project is different, but our customers rely on our consistency of producing high level information and reporting.

We have naturally reached the point after safely growing the business where we need to expand and we have a 5 year expansion plan which you would be a key part of.

What is really great about our business is that it feels like one big family inside the company and we are keen to keep that mentality and feeling – it is our mindset that happy, well rewarded staff produce the best work and are less likely to go off looking for other opportunities down the line. Consistency of contact is key for us and our clients – nobody has left us after joining yet, and we are hoping to keep it that way as best we can!

We have a small office based in Rubery, Birmingham as well as a couple of yards/depots that the site operatives work from in the South Birmingham and Worcestershire areas. From there we cover projects nationally.

Who are we looking for?

The person who gets this role will be something of a problem solver, someone for who puzzles make them tick. This role will involve taking snap shots of information and then using your knowledge (and the knowledge of those around you) to take those snap shots and put them together into a bigger picture to understand how a building is working, how it was constructed, the issues that might arise from that process.

The person would be a self-starter, someone capable of managing their own time and working remotely (the pandemic has changed how we work as a nation....) on a laptop in their own home, but also happy to meet up or work in the office – the choice would be yours, but you may not always be surrounded by people during your day to day as we are so busy (but would be supported, in this day and age technology is key!).

The person would enjoy a mixture of challenges day to day (no two projects are the same) but also would thrive on following processes to produce the standard and level of reporting our customers expect – report writing is a huge part of what we do after we interpret the information.

You would definitely need to be a good communicator – you will be liaising with your own site team gathering the information you need to put your report together for the client, so giving clear instructions and communicating during a project as site conditions change is something very key.

Attention to detail is equally important – our clients expect the best and our reputation is built on that fact.

You need to be located in the Central to South Birmingham or Worcestershire areas. Please do not apply if you are outside of this locale.

What would we want you to do day to day?

Once up and running, you would be liaising daily with a site team of two operatives (a lead and a second) who you will be working with. Think of them as your eyes and ears on site – they go to site and gather the information you ask them to.

You understand what the client needs and wants, put a scope of work together for the site team, then take their findings and turn that information into something the client can use. That may be as simple as pulling photographs together after the team have marked out reinforcement positions, but it may be as complex as a multi-stage report, it all depends on the project size. Some take a single day, others take a few weeks – we work on a wide variety and so will you.

We will teach you all that you need to know, support you as you grow your professional understanding and knowledge.

Where do we see you going?

You will be joining during an exciting phase of expansion having built the business from the ground up and are now established with repeat business and a solid grounding (company launched in 2015). For the right candidate, there will be an opportunity for progression both in a professional capacity (being supported for Chartership etc.) and in growth of the team and company potentially leading to a managerial/leadership position further on. For the right candidate, who fits in well and enjoys the role, we are confident they may never look to move elsewhere again.

In the shorter team you will be given a mixture of side by side training, courses that the company would need you to go on, some site based experience to give you hands on knowledge of what we do and a lot of initial support to make sure you understand what you need to do, how we do things and can become a fully fledged member of our family.

In time, there will be more graduates coming into the business and we will be looking for you to be the template and a shining example, and the pay will be reviewed to reflect your responsibilities once this happens if you are the right person for the role.

Salary banding:

£22,000 - £36,000 per annum depending on experience and qualifications. Uplifted rate for out of hours/overnight stays if required. Required equipment (laptop, printer etc.) provided.

How to apply:

Please email initially with your CV and any covering evidence explaining why you feel you would be good for the role. Please indicate your salary expectation clearly.

The next stage will be an interview via zoom/teams and then a face to face meeting.
